Raise the woof: It’s National Dog Day

Caturday can move over for a moment. It’s time to celebrate America’s canine companions on National Dog Day.

Aug. 26 marks a time to honor all breeds from pedigreed Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show winners, the mutts who sleep at the foot of the bed and the famous canines who inspire us. (That includes you Santa’s Little Helper.) It’s also a time to “galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year,” according to the National Dog Day website. The day was started in 2004 by Colleen Paige, a pet and family lifestyle expert. The date was the day Paige’s family adopted her first dog.
Since then, the celebration has gained momentum and has even been recognized by the Legislature in New York. Paige encourages people to celebrate National Dog Day by donating to their local shelter. If celebrants want to take big step and get a dog, she encourages them to adopt from a shelter or rescue organization. The National Dog Day website also recommends marking the day by volunteering at a shelter or writing a local representative about supporting a ban on puppy mills.

For those who like pets of the feline persuasion, you’ll will have to wait a few weeks to celebrate. National Cat Day is Sunday, Oct. 29.
